Number three may be the lucky charm for businesswoman

IT COULD be a case of thirdtime lucky for Maroochydore businesswoman and mum Yvette Adams, a shortlisted finalist in two categories of the 2007 Queensland Small Business Champions awards.

Her creative services agency, The Creative Collective, is one of 16 Sunshine Coast companies to make the awards shortlist. The small business champion awards have run in New South Wales for several years, expanding nationally for the first time in 2007.

Having also been a finalist in the Sunshine Coast Business Women’s Awards and the Australian Home Based Business Awards in 2007, Ms Adams said she was “chuffed” to be named a finalist in the small business champions awards.

“Given the competition ... and the fact it’s Queenslandwide, it’s certainly an honour,” she said.

The 30-year-old mother of two is actually a finalist in two categories, the Young Small Business Champion Entrepreneur and the Professional Services section. The other Coast company to receive dual recognition in the awards was BYOkids.

The Tewantin-based firm was a shortlisted finalist while owner Leah Burke was also shortlisted in the Entrepreneur category. The Coast businesses shortlisted covered the full spectrum from vineyards to employment agencies, restaurants, tourist attractions and builders.

Even a medical centre made it through. Nicky Jardine, practice manager at Medicine on Second, which has a state-of-the-art practice at Maroochydore and new clinic at Forest Glen, said she was thrilled.

“It’s meant lots of hard work and, at times, pushing boundaries because our industry is highly regulated. But when you’re named as a finalist in an award like this it all seems worthwhile,” she said.

The winners will be announced in Brisbane on September 22.

State winners will contest the national final in Sydney in November where the overall winner will receive a $40,000 prize package including a trip for two to the UK to visit winners of the British Small Business Champions awards.

Coast finalists: A Kiss from An Angel, Accom Caloundra, Ascent Building Solutions, Blind Man’s Bluff Vineyards, BYOkids, Hire Swimwear, Medicine on Second, MU Australia, New Staff Solutions, Noosa Cruise and Travel, Sea English Academy, Select Bathroom Plumbing, Spirit House, Bellingham Maze, Buildmore Group, The Creative Collective.
