Heavyweights start their big diets with a spot of lunch

9 Feb 2008 8:23 PM - Sunshine Coast Daily

These generous blokes are putting their weight behind a good cause - literally.

Developer Harry Reed, Sunshine Coast Daily online editor Mark Furler and columnist and sports presenter Ashley Robinson have have joined a group of 20 men determined to lose 20 kilos each in 20 weeks as part of the Twenty20 Weight Loss Challenge.

For every one of the 20 kilos the men do not lose, a fee of $100 has to be paid to charity.

Sunshine Coast doctor, entrepreneur and philanthropist Dr Michael Ryan yesterday launched the challenge, which plays on the success of the Twenty20 cricket format.

And Dr Ryan has also put himself at the wicket, weighing in at 111kg.

He said he felt a "responsibility" to his patients to practise what he preached, so he called on blokes he knew to "enlist themselves in the challenge for their own good too".

Funds raised will go to two Indian charities.

People wanting to sponsor a participant in the Twenty20 challenge can email michaelandcheryl@internode.on.net. There will be updates at www.2020weightlosschallenge.com.au and on www.thedaily.com.au.
